Settling in before a plate of freshly charred skewers with a chilled beer in hand brings welcome comfort at the end of the day. In Sumida 3-chome, Sumida Ward, Enko Toto offers just such an unhurried, down-to-earth evening retreat.
A natural place to begin is the house specialty: skewered asari clams. Skewer enthusiasts will also find salt-grilled negima chicken skewers, rich eel liver skewers, and assorted skewer platters cooked to a tender finish. The selection of small plates extends beyond grilled items, encompassing the day's fresh sashimi, compact and juicy karaage fried chicken, and colorful pork shabu-shabu salads. Switching smoothly from bottled lager to chuhai, diners often round off their meal with a piping-hot plate of aromatic fried yakisoba noodles.
The dining room carries a restful, vintage Showa-era atmosphere, feeling equally natural for solo drinks at the counter or relaxed evenings shared with companions and family. The restaurant opens at 17:00 in the evening and is closed on Mondays. Payment is cash only, so it is wise to prepare ahead before dropping by.
